To Connect with Nature: Garden Bathing at Pun Hlaing Estate

Updated: Jun 21, 2020

By Carolyn Phoo Ngon

Garden Bathing is the term from the Japanese in the 1980s as a physiological and psychological exercise called shinrin-yoku, which means "sinking in the garden/forest atmosphere”. It is not just for the wilderness-lover; can be as simple as walking in any neutral environment and intentionally connecting with what’s around you. If you're in nature longer, you can feel less depressed, less worried. And if you're living a beautifully landscaped oasis of estate in nature, you have much increased creativity and ability.

Who is Garden Bathing suitable for?

Garden bathing has both physical and mental health benefits. Garden bathing exercises can be great fun for adults and children alike and useful in teaching concentration and mindfulness; whilst also providing an excellent opportunity to learn from each other. Listen to the sounds of the nature. Look at the scenery surrounding you. Take slow deep breaths and smell the fragrance of the fresh garden air. Touch the trees, feel the leaves and soil. Take your time and look around as you stroll along on a garden path. Engage your senses and observe your surroundings. Stop every once in awhile and sit or look up and all around. Be still.
