PGA Professional Stephen Chick is hoping the recent SEASAC Golf event at The International School Yangon will be a catalyst for growing the grassroots game in Myanmar. Chick, who is the Director of Golf at Pun Hlaing Golf Club, has been leading the development of golf in the area and worked in conjunction with the ISY International School of Yangon to stage the event, which was hosted over two days at the Gary Player designed Pun Hlaing Golf Club.
One hundred students competed in this years’ event on the course recently voted the ‘best course in Myanmar’. Some fantastic scoring was achieved, particularly by the females with two players from Thailand finishing on level par after two rounds. The Boys division winning score was won with 147 over two rounds.
Represented in the SEASAC golf tournament were schools from Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar and Hong Kong.
“I am very enthusiastic to ensure this event proves to be a catalyst for growing the grass roots game right here in Myanmar,” said Chick. “The timing of this event is perfect with the imminent launch of our new Golf Academy which will be managed by a PGA Professional who is motivated to grow the game. There were some future stars in the making at this event for sure.”
SEASAC exists to support International schools in South-East Asia in achieving their educational goals. Through a range of sporting and artistic activities it aims to promote closer links among teachers, administrators, and students of its member schools; encourage opportunities for healthy competition and the pursuit of excellence; develop and extend social and cultural interaction; and to promote an appreciation of the rights, dignity and worth of every person.
The SEASAC calendar includes 24 events over the academic year. Arts and Model United Nations festivals complement sporting tournaments in badminton, basketball, cross country, football, golf, gymnastics, rugby, softball, swimming, tennis, touch and volleyball. The conference festivals and sporting events are hosted by sixteen member schools, across six South East Asian countries.
For more than 3,500 students a year SEASAC events are the highlight of their co-curricular school experience and the values learnt and friendships made provide lifelong memories and meaning.
